Arrival in Kathmandu – Welcome to Nepal’s Capital

Upon your arrival at Kathmandu International Airport, you’ll be warmly greeted and transferred to your hotel by a representative. After check-in, take time to relax and unwind from your journey.

PM: Proceed for a sightseeing tour of Pashupatinath Temple and witness the sacred Aarati ceremony.

Pashupatinath Temple – one of the most revered Hindu shrines in the world and among the five principal pilgrimage sites for Hindus. Every year during the Maha Shivaratri Festival, thousands of devotees from across the globe gather here to pay homage to Lord Shiva.

Pashupatinath represents Lord Shiva in his most compassionate form — the guardian of fertility. Unlike many other shrines, no animal sacrifices are made here; instead, devotees offer fruits, flowers, and vermilion. The temple is beautifully situated on the banks of the sacred Bagmati River, where many Hindus believe that being cremated grants the soul a direct path to heaven.

Kathmandu Durbar Square

The historic heart of Kathmandu, Durbar Square was once the royal seat where kings were crowned and ruled. Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979, the square is a living museum of palaces, courtyards, and intricately carved temples showcasing Nepal’s finest traditional architecture.

Discover Hanuman Dhoka, the grand entrance to the old royal palace.

Visit the Kumari Ghar, home of the Living Goddess Kumari, a young girl worshipped as the human incarnation of Goddess Taleju. If fortunate, you may catch a glimpse of her at a carved wooden window.

Stroll past Freak Street, once a legendary hippie hub during the Flower Power era.

Learn about the 2015 earthquake’s impact and the ongoing restoration that is reviving the square’s mystic charm.

Budhanilkantha Temple (Jal Narayan)

An open-air shrine dedicated to Lord Vishnu, Budhanilkantha is famed for its magnificent 5-meter-long black stone statue of Vishnu reclining on a bed of serpents in a sacred pond. Carved from a single rock during the Lichchhavi period, it is Nepal’s largest and most impressive stone carving, drawing pilgrims and visitors alike.

Boudhanath Stupa

One of the world’s largest Buddhist stupas, Boudhanath stands majestically just beyond Pashupatinath. Built in the shape of a Mandala, the massive whitewashed dome is adorned with 108 Buddha images, 147 prayer wheels, and colorful prayer flags fluttering in the wind. Surrounded by monasteries, Boudhanath is home to Nepal’s largest Tibetan community, creating an atmosphere rich in spirituality and culture.

Patan Durbar Square

Located in the historic city of Lalitpur, just south of Kathmandu, Patan Durbar Square is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the valley’s most enchanting cultural landmarks. Once the royal seat of the Malla dynasty, the square is home to ancient palaces, temples, and shrines that showcase exquisite Newari architecture and intricate woodcarvings. Highlights include the Taleju Temple, Bhimsen Temple, Krishna Mandir, and several museums and galleries that preserve Nepal’s rich artistic legacy.

Bhaktapur Durbar Square

A short 30-minute drive east of Kathmandu takes you to Bhaktapur, a medieval city steeped in tradition and artistry. Its Durbar Square, also a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is often called an open-air museum of medieval Nepalese art and architecture.

Key attractions include:

  • Lion Gate & Golden Gate – masterfully crafted entrances to the palace complex.
  • Palace of Fifty-Five Windows – built in 1427 and later remodeled by King Bhupatindra Malla.
  • Nyatapola Temple – the tallest pagoda-style temple in the Kathmandu Valley.
  • Dattatreya Temple and charming stone statues of ancient kings.

Kailashnath Mahadev Statue

Located in Sanga, on the border of Bhaktapur and Kavrepalanchwok districts (about 20 km from Kathmandu), this towering 144-feet Shiva statue is the tallest Shiva statue in the world and ranks as the 40th tallest statue globally — just a few places below the Statue of Liberty. Built with copper, zinc, concrete, and steel, the statue stands as a monumental symbol of devotion and craftsmanship, attracting pilgrims and visitors from across the world.
